To the Cousins
I've been home for two weeks now, and I've seen friends from every stage of my life, the kindergarteners (not that I keep in touch with many), primary and secondary school mates, college friends, friends from uni (except you Reading ones...I really miss you, by the way), even made new friends through my existing ones.
And yet, I haven't seen more than half of my cousins. To the people who know me, this would probably come as a huge surprise. It's a surprise even to me. We're supposed to be unbreakable, the closest group of cousins ever. In a way, deep down somewhere, I think we still are.
On the surface, however, we've all forgotten that. We no longer yearn for one another, because materialistic needs and lesser loves plague our minds and dominate our thoughts, drowning out the need for family, so often taken for granted because of its ready availability.
As I've come to learn over the past year and a half, you never really know what you've got till it's gone. This is the reason why I subject myself to the torment of hope and then rejection, when asking the cousins to meet up. This is why I get frustrated when the answer is no, or when we are taken for granted for a current obsession.
People seem to forget that at the end of the day, it is only family that will always, always stay by your side. No matter who you become, no matter what happens, family stands by you.
This is the reason why I still ask the cousins to meet up, this is why I still risk rejection, and this is why I continue to hope.
Because no matter what, my family is my family. No matter how many times they reject me, push me away, I know that I will still be there to catch them when they fall. I will not judge, I will not take offence.
To the family members who have made the effort, I know who you are, and I appreciate it with all my heart.
