Make Ice Cream without an Ice Cream Machine!
Tuesday, May 25, 2010A few days ago, I was desperately craving a McDonald's chocolate sundae.
Living where I live, though, getting to a McDonald's is a bit of a trip. So I decided to Google ice cream recipes, even though I didn't have an ice cream maker. I think somewhere deep down I was hoping there would be an ice cream recipe to save me and quench my craving.
I stumbled upon this one delicious looking ice cream recipe that doesn't need an ice cream maker (yay me!), from DavidLebovitz.com and decided I had to make it.
So I dragged Michelle along with me to get the ingredients from Coles, and proceeded to make it just about an hour after I found the recipe.
Here's the recipe: (taken from David Lebovitz - visit his recipe webpage for the story on how he came up with this ice cream recipe, as well as a funny paragraph on how to peel a banana)
2 ounces (55 g) bittersweet or semisweet chocolate, chopped
6 tablespoons (80 ml) milk, whole or low-fat
6 tablespoons (80 ml) Baileys liquor
1 medium-sized ripe banana, peeled, and cut into chunks
1 tablespoon (15 ml) dark rum
1. In a small bowl set over a pan of simmering water (or in the microwave), melt the chocolate with the milk.
2. Blend the melted chocolate the Baileys, the banana, and rum until smooth.
3. Pour into a plastic or metal container, cover, and freeze for at least 4 hours.
I found that if I follow the 80ml specifications for the Baileys and the milk that the ice cream turns out terribly boozy, so for my second batch I decided to try the recipe according to the number of tablespoons and it came out perfect.
I also used diluted condensed milk instead of whole or low-fat milk in the second batch (because Michelle finished the last of my milk!), and it was wonderful!
To counter the booziness of the first batch, I made up a little chocolate drizzling that turned out to be so yummy we used it on the second batch too!
Just mix up about 4 tablespoons of cocoa powder with 1 tablespoon of condensed milk, and 5 tablespoons water.
I have a third batch freezing and ready for eating. Try topping it with raisins - it is heavenly!
Happy eating!
