My American Snack Obsession

Friday, November 26, 2010

For as long as I can remember, I've been obsessed with American snack foods. They always make little appearances in movies, and I've always made a mental note of them (I'm a little bit food-obsessed) and shelved them away for future reference. If I ever got the chance, I was going to go snack-crazy and buy them all up and binge on them in a room with my closest friends.

But, since I have no plans to go to the US, I've sort of resigned myself to the fact that I may never hold a squishy Sno Ball or bite into a Twinkie (Oh, the power of media!).

I never thought to Google it until this morning.

Well, guess what?

There's a specialty food store right here in Melbourne that sells all the snacks that I'm so curious about! It's called USA Foods, and you can check it out here. I am definitely going to check their store out soon!

Do any of you recall seeing these foods in movies or TV series that you may have watched?

First row, l-r

Twizzlers: I've seen these in countless movies. I have kind of a love-hate relationship with liquorice (it gets stuck between my teeth!) but I definitely want to try it out!

Twinkies: These are my all-time biggest obsession. I don't quite know why, but I've always wanted to know what the American counterpart to Malaysia's 'Twiggie' tastes like. I first sat up and paid attention when Xander on 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' launched into a Twinkie-loving speech, and have been obsessed with tasting one ever since.

Nutter Butter: I first heard about these on the TV show 'Friends'. I have found so many Nutter Butter recipes since, and I want to try them all

Second row, l-r

Reese's Peanut Butter Cups: Who could forget the big Hawaiian dude who called Adam Sandler that in '50 First Dates'! I have actually tried these (Malaysia has bouts of genius importing treats from time to time), and I think they taste great!

Pop Tarts: These have made so many 'cameo appearances'. They had them in Malaysia for a while, and I liked having them toasted. But at RM 15 per box of 5, I stopped after the second box.

Dr Pepper: I think I unwittingly grouped the 3 products that I've actually seen in Malaysia into one row. I haven't tried it, though. I want to know what all the fuss is about.

Third row, l-r

Sno Balls: Second biggest obsession, but my 'fire' died down after I found out there's coconut in it. Blegh. But they look so yum! I remember first seeing them in 'Hot Chick', and then in 'Laws of Attraction'. I am so disappointed that there's coconut in them!

S'mores: I've tried various versions (read: ripoffs) of the S'more, but I haven't stopped wondering what the real thing tastes like.

Ding Dongs: I never noticed them till 'Transformers', but now I want to try them! I am such a junk food junkie :)

Okay, I'm done with my snack food rant. Does anyone else have a snack food that they really want to try?
